Our Tasty World!

Our Tasty World!

22 ноября 2020

On Thursday 19th November, the Moscow Economic School held its annual World Languages Day. This year, our students inquired about foods around the world. Not only did our inquisitive students research foods fr om the UK and the United States but with the thirst for knowledge as abundant as ever, researched a variety of exotic cuisine from the countries, whose languages they study.

During their inquiry, students researched dishes from various countries, before choosing a dish to show their class. After this, students made a poster bringing together the similarities they discovered among the dishes they had inquired into. Students understood that food is one of the greatest cultural aspects that brings people together. Valeria from the 8th Grade explained how the project not only developed her leadership skills, as she designated tasks to her classmates. “Our poster didn’t only show were all interested in cuisine from different parts of the world but also our interests,’’ as she proudly showed me her animae-drawings.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed the project, especially creating the posters. “Working part of a team gave me a sense of responsibility,” commented Emila from the 5th grade, who enjoys art. Some more technologically-minded students created posters with numerous QR codes allowing the Inquirer to enter a world of exotic recipes, presentations and videos showing demonstrations of certain dishes being cooked. Some students even commented how this year’s inquiry has inspired them to make their dishes in future. Susanna (7th Grade) exclaimed how easy it was to make the Canadian savoury /sweet snack, Beavertails.

The first half of the day started with an assembly wh ere students presented the results of their inquiry. In the morning break, the modern languages exhibition opened and our students immediately were able to look at each other’s works. In their lessons, participated in an online quiz, answering questions written by members of the Languages Department. The atmosphere in all classes can be described as rambunctious as all groups competed to demonstrate what they had learned over the past two weeks.

Indeed, Languages Day was not over at this point as our canteen offered some cuisine from different countries. We were offered a choice of ‘Belegtes Broetchen’ (a German sandwich) for breakfast or a Spanish tortilla for breakfast while lunchtime offered the well-known Thai soup ‘Tom Yam’ with seafood and a choice of risotto or udon noodles with vegetables.

The dishes were well-received by students, who suggested that these dishes could be added to the menu for the rest of the year. Many students such as Andrei (6th class) expressed gratitude that ‘the canteen tried to do something different.’

A big thanks has to go to our students who have made Languages Day an event, not only to be enjoyed but to be remembered as an eventful day in our school calendar.
